Saints Joachim and Anne

A Roman Catholic Church

ABOUT US

Saints Joachim and Anne Parish is a Roman Catholic church serving the communities of Attica, Varysburg and the
surrounding areas.  Father George Devanapalle is supported by hardworking staff and volunteers to grow our
church, enhance our liturgy, and serve those in need.

OUR HISTORY

Ss. Joachim and Anne Parish

These two churches, St Vincent de Paul of Attica and St. Joseph of Varysburg, have merged to become the parish of Ss. Joachim and Anne.

St. Vincent de Paul Site

St. Vincent de Paul originally began with a few Catholic families who lived in the Attica area.  They purchased a small lot in 1851 for $45.00 and within five years built a little frame church.  As Attica expanded, a more favorable site was found, and the present church, which can accommodate 380 persons, was erected at 50 East Avenue in 1882.  In about 1900 the present rectory was built.  A Catholic school served our youth from 1900 until its closure in 2007.  The parish prospered, and in 1939, several parishioners donated a beautiful replica of the life-size Miraculous Crucifix of Limpas, Spain, which now dominates the sanctuary of the church.

St. Joseph’s Site

St. Joseph Church of Varysburg, located at 2311 Attica Road, is a lovely little country church that can accommodate up to 200 persons.  Built in 1911 in the modified English Gothic style, it is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, a specially designed altar and an inspiring rose window.

Our two churches share much in common, historically and presently.  The already established Attica parish generously supplied the original furnace, some funding, moral support and many workers for the building of the Varysburg church.  The two parishes even shared a priest from 1911 through 1913.  In 2008, with the merging of the parishes, our priest once again serves both of these sites.
